Justice Shouldn’t Expire – HBO Documentary

HBO Films presents: MEA MAXIMA CULPA: SILENCE IN THE HOUSE OF GOD

Justice Shouldn't Expire Reform the Statute of Limitations for Child Sex Abuse. View this gripping documentary to learn why. Directed by Alex Gibney. For more than two decades, starting in the 1950s, Father Lawrence Murphy sexually abused 200 deaf boys at St. John’s School for the Deaf in St. Francis, Wisconsin. The boys—dependent on Father Murphy as their translator—had no way to escape the abuse. But when they grew up, four of these victims were among the first to seek justice from the church that protected their abuser. Mea Maxima Culpa, a documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney, tells the story of the men’s courageous protest against the Church’s cover-up of child sexual abuse. Though focused on the four men, the film sweeps its way from the diocese of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, through the churches of Ireland, to the highest office at the Vatican. Mea Maxima Culpa (“through my most grievous fault” in Latin) powerfully exposes the scope of clergy child sexual abuse and should help hold the Catholic Church accountable for its crimes.
